Football Showdown at Soccer City

The Netherlands’ progress to their third World Cup final after beating Uruguay on Tuesday in Cape Town, with the 3-2 win setting up a showdown with Spain at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Sunday 11 July.

The Dutch lost both of their previous finals in 1974 and 1978 to hosts West Germany and Argentina respectively and now they want to change that pattern, following a match where Uruguay came in as the underdogs, maybe because of a lack of crowd support after their controversial win over baGhana baGhana, Uruguay made Netherlands work for their win.

Spain outplayed Germany and now the Spanish have the biggest prize of all within their sights. Spain play for the first time for the World Cup, thanks to Carles Puyol’s goal from a powerful header in the second half of their match on Wednesday. The 1-0 victory over Germany was a repeat of their meeting in the European Championship final two years ago, which gave Spain its first major title in 44 years.

The Netherlands and Spain have never met in the World Cup and this will be a World Cup final between two teams of undoubted quality and very interesting to watch these two European clubs battle it out on South African soil!
