A little-known English sparkling wine has beaten major champagne houses to be crowned the best in the world.
Camel Valley Wines in Cornwall knocked champagne giants off their pedestal by picking up an International Wine Challenge Trophy – beating more than 450 individual wines entered.
It is the first time an English wine has ever won an IWC trophy, considered the most important of the many medals and honours awarded in the wine industry.

As the South African wine industry continues to grow exports, it is also achieving increasing international recognition for its ethical approach to winemaking, says Wines of South Africa (WOSA) CEO Su Birch. Within the space of a few weeks SA was acknowledged by influential UK trade publication The Drinks Business, winning its Ethical Award for 2009 while also earning the lion’s share of trophies and prizes in the Fairtrade Wine Committee’s competition for best wines of the year, held in London.

Records tumbled at the 25th Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild auction held in the Stellenbosch winelands over the weekend, when a record number of buyers spent over R5,2 million rand on the 2009 lineup of wines made exclusively for the auction by members of the Guild.
Bidding was brisk and the wines fetched unexpected high prices right from the onset culminating in a record turnover of R5,204 400. This represents an increase of over 5% on last year despite the global recession and a 10% reduction in the quantity of wine that went under the hammer this year.

Ntsiki Biyela form Stellekaya in Stellenbosch has been crowned SA Woman Winemaker of the Year 2009. Ntsiki beat 64 wine entries, from 28 woman winemakers across South Africa in this year’s competition, which is sponsored by Landbouweekblad, the country’s leading agriculture and agri-business publication. The competition took place for the sixth time this year. After the top wines are selected through a blind tasting, a choice panel of judges interviewed the six finalists. The winner is judged according to her overall personality, her view of the wine industry and her career goals.
