Something new from Fairview!

Fairview has always been a popular stop for visitors to the wine region of Paarl. One reason, is because they have a commitment to innovation and community support, and one of their initiatives is the exploration of the potential of lesser known grape varieties. They have now put a selection together in an interesting tutored tasting, where they hope to help visitors learn about their tastebuds as well as the grapes in the bottle.

As many wine fans will know, the majority of wine sold in South Africa, and around the world, falls within a range of six or seven varietals including Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Consumers know these varietals and enjoy the wines, so understandably producers provide what the consumer wants. At Fairview, they also produce the varieties mentioned above, but also feel that it is important to try new varietals; grapes that may not be popular or widely known; bottles that may require a bit more explanation before consumer picks it up off a shelf or orders it from a winelist.

So with that in mind they have decided to introduce an alternative tasting option at our Beryl Back Tasting Room. The grape varieties that are included are those that you may well have heard of, but never tried. Here’s an opportunity!

This tasting option comprises 8 lesser known Fairview wines with 8 of their cheeses. This elegantly appointed tasting room offers seated, tutored tastings for smaller groups and includes Fairview olive oils served with fresh ciabatta. Continue reading Something new from Fairview!

Taste over 1200 wines at the RMB WineX Cape Town – 19 & 20th August

RMB WineX Cape Town – now in its eighth year – will open at the CTICC on 19 August as a completely different show. Always the largest and most important premium consumer wine event in the Western Cape, RMB WineX will be raising an already elevated bar. Aiming for quality rather than quantity, the organisers have amended the show format cutting it back to a two evening event, instead of the usual three night rolling party.

“The reason for hosting a show of this kind – and the reason that Rand Merchant Bank has been its headline sponsor since its inception – is to put the country’s finest producers and the region’s true wine enthusiasts into the same space,” said show founder and international wine judge Michael Fridjhon. “By reducing the number of evenings at which the winemakers are required be in attendance we make it possible for them to be present for the entire show. This in turn means that we’ve narrowed the focus by creating an environment in which wine consumers can actually engage with the people who make the wines. Obviously this means we’ve had to restrict the number of exhibitors as well as the number of visitors – all in order to ensure that the wine enthusiasts get quality time with quality producers.”

Does the Type of Wine Glass Effect the “Taste” of Wine?

Many wine tasters are adamant that an optimum glass in terms of size and dimensions exists for a particular wine type or even style. that it is absolutely imperative that the correct glass be used if maximum enjoyment is to be had. But how much of this idea has truth in fact, and how much is the result of concerted marketing efforts on the part of some glass manufacturers to effect a marketing point of difference.
